30 sue Northampton County Prison over MRSA

ALLENTOWN - Thirty former or current inmates of Northampton County Prison have filed a federal suit alleging that they contracted a drug-resistent MRSA infection because of conditions there and lack of treatment.

The suit against the prison and its health-care contractor allege that conditions have fostered a breeding ground for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Attorneys for the county did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Prison officials confirmed an outbreak of MRSA in 2005. Two former Bucks County inmates won a $1.2 million jury award in a MRSA-related suit in 2005. - AP
