STRINGTOWN — State corrections officials are investigating the death of a convicted killer who was found in his cell Tuesday. Officials at Mack Alford Correctional Center found Monroe Plumlee, 48, unresponsive, said Jerry Massie, spokesman for the Department of Corrections.

There were no obvious signs on trauma, and officials are awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of death, Massie said. Plumlee's unit at the prison is not air-conditioned. Temperatures this week have been near 100 degrees in some parts of the state. Plumlee was serving life without the possibility of parole for first- degree murder from Le Flore County. He was convicted of killing his mother by nearly cutting off her head with a butcher knife, according to court records.
