Travis County inmate dies

An inmate at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle died Monday morning in her cell, Travis County sheriff's department spokesman Roger Wade said.

Wade said a correctional officer found Rachel A. Jackson, 21, unconscious just before 5:45 a.m. He called emergency medical workers, and Jackson was pronounced dead at 6:07 a.m., Wade said.

He said that foul play is not suspected and that the Travis County medical examiner's office is waiting on test results before determining the cause of death.

Wade said Jackson was arrested July 15 by Austin police and was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

He said the sheriff's office internal affairs office and major crimes unit will investigate the death.
