kkrause@... The Dallas County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of
a 32-year-old jail inmate who was found unconscious in his cell last
week, sheriff's officials said.
Cory Bailey was declared dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital at 7:35
p.m. Friday, according to the county medical examiner's office.
Determination of the cause and manner of his death is pending the
completion of several tests, a medical examiner's office
representative said.
Assistant Chief Deputy Mona Birdwell said Mr. Bailey had been moved
from the Decker Jail to the west tower jail after being involved in
an altercation with jail guards. She said she didn't have further
details.
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards requires that the
department's
criminal investigations division look into each in-custody jail
death, Chief Birdwell said. If policy violations are discovered, a
separate investigation is conducted by the internal affairs
division,
she said.
Kim Leach, the sheriff's spokeswoman, refused to release information
about the death.
"I have no other details at this time and will not until the
investigation is complete," Ms. Leach said in an e-mail.
