WESTVILLE, Ind.

Authorities say an inmate serving a 45-year sentence for murder was found dead in his cell at the Westville Correctional Facility of an apparent suicide.

A prison spokesman says 39-year-old John Byers was found hanging in his cell early Thursday. Byers was alone in his cell in the prison's maximum security unit.

Prison staffers performed CPR and called emergency personnel, but were unable to revive him.

Byers had been imprisoned for a Delaware County murder since 1988. He was scheduled to be released in 2011.

State police will assist the Department of Correction in investigating the death.
