MIAMI, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A judge says the Federal Detention Center in Miami did nothing to protect a female inmate who accuses guards of sexually assaulting her numerous times.
U.S. District Judge Cecilia Altonaga called the Bureau of Prisons "woefully deficient" for ignoring the woman's complaints, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.
The woman, identified publicly only as S.R., has settled with three of the four guards but lost a $5 million liability case against the government because the statute of limitations had expired.
The woman alleges three guards made her strip and touched her genitals during 2002 and 2003, while a fourth guard raped her repeatedly in 2004, the Herald reported.
The woman, while incarcerated, reported the assaults to the warden, investigators, a psychiatrist, a federal judge who had sentenced her for drug trafficking in North Carolina and a federal prosecutor in Miami, the Herald reported. The four guards denied assaulting the woman.
